Marine

- sector at a turning point

GTMA has identified some key areas of opportunities for our members in the UK marine sector, which is at a turning point as it faces a period of expansion allied with growing international competition.

The UK marine sector has an annual turnover of around £7bn and new areas for business will come from actions to meet supply chain requirements in areas to meet marine sector issues including:

  • Environmental legislation – which is driving demand for more sustainable vessels, equipment and systems.
  • Productivity needs – the requirement is for great innovation and higher productivity levels by suppliers to play their part in helping UK-based OEMs and Tier 1s face a growing threat from countries such as Norway, France, Germany, Brazil and China who have strategies to attack the market.
  • Increased automation – the increasing international demand for advanced technologies and systems integration is bringing opportunities for GTMA companies with high level engineering skills.

Marine is one of three sectors highlighted in our latest Executive Briefing report (the others were Rail and niche automotive) and is one of our priorities in 2011.

The sector’s needs in areas including recycling, renewable energy and composites also dovetail with GTMA member experience. Many of our members are already extremely successful in supplying into aerospace which has very similar needs in terms of supplier accreditation standards.
