Rail News – Late August 2026

A major rail manufacturer has swung into the red after a year of higher costs and project delivery challenges, despite securing new orders and setting out plans for further investment in its Derby operations.

Alstom Transport UK, which is based at the historic Litchurch Lane Works in Derby, reported a pre-tax loss of £19.6m for its latest financial year, compared with a £21.9m profit previously.

Turnover also fell from £555.4m to £414.4m, with the business pointing to rising costs, geopolitical uncertainty and difficult contractual conditions across the UK rail sector.

Despite the weaker financial performance, order intake increased to £240m, providing the business with a pipeline for future activity.
