What is Metrology?
Metrology is the science of measurement, covering the accuracy, precision, and repeatability of dimensional and physical measurements. In manufacturing, metrology underpins quality assurance: it is used both to calibrate the machinery used in production and to verify that finished parts conform to specification. Metrology FAQs
A metrology company supplies measurement equipment, inspection services, or calibration to manufacturers. This includes selling and supporting CMMs, scanners, and gauges, providing subcontract inspection of components, and calibrating measurement instruments to national standards so results remain accurate and traceable.
CMM inspection uses a coordinate measuring machine to measure the geometry of a component by probing points on its surface. The results are compared against the CAD model or drawing to verify the part is within tolerance. CMM inspection is the standard method for verifying precision-machined components.
Calibration ensures measurement instruments give accurate, traceable results. Without regular calibration, gauges and machines drift over time, which can allow out-of-tolerance parts to pass inspection. UKAS-accredited calibration provides certified traceability to national measurement standards, which is mandatory in regulated sectors.
Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value. Precision is how repeatable a measurement is when taken multiple times. A good measurement system needs both: precise but inaccurate equipment gives consistently wrong results, while accurate but imprecise equipment gives unreliable ones.
