What are Press Tools?

Press tools are hardened tooling assemblies mounted in a press to cut, punch, shear, trim, form, and bend sheet material, most commonly steel, aluminium, and copper alloys. Presses may be mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic, and press tools are an invaluable method of producing components at high volume with excellent repeatability. Common press tool types include:

  • Blanking and piercing tools – cutting flat profiles and holes from sheet
  • Forming and bending tools – shaping the blank into three-dimensional geometry
  • Progression (progressive) tools – performing multiple operations in sequence with each press stroke
  • Transfer tools – moving larger parts between stations within the press
  • Shaving, trimming, and coining tools for finishing operations

Press tools are made up of many precision parts and components, including punches, dies, strippers, pilots, and die sets, and must be built from high-quality tool steels and maintained to a high standard to perform safely and consistently.

Applications of Press Tools

The automotive sector is the largest user of press tooling in the UK, with body panels, brackets, terminals, and structural parts all produced on press tools. Press tooling also produces pressed components for electronics, white goods, aerospace, medical, and construction products, from micro-scale connector terminals to heavy-gauge structural pressings.

Benefits of Working with UK Press Toolmakers

  • Full design and manufacture service from strip layout to tool tryout
  • Fast turnaround on tool repairs, modifications, and regrinds, protecting production uptime
  • Access to precision punches, dies, and standard press tool components
  • Proven tool steels and heat treatment for long tool life
  • Direct collaboration between toolmaker and press shop, reducing development loops

GTMA is the Gauge and Tool Makers Association – a UK trade association connecting engineering buyers with accredited press tool manufacturers, press toolmakers, and tooling component suppliers.

Press Tools FAQs

A press tool manufacturer designs and builds the tooling used in power presses to cut and form sheet metal components. Services typically cover strip layout design, tool design, manufacture, tryout, and ongoing maintenance, modification, and repair of tooling throughout its production life.

A progression tool, also called a progressive die, performs a sequence of cutting and forming operations as a metal strip feeds through the tool, producing a finished component with every press stroke. Progression tools suit high-volume parts because they combine multiple operations in one tool.

Working elements such as punches and dies are made from hardened tool steels, with tungsten carbide used for very high-volume or abrasive applications. Die sets and bolsters are made from cast iron or mild steel. Material choice balances tool life against cost for the expected production volume.

Well-designed and properly maintained press tools can produce millions of components. Tool life depends on the material being pressed, component complexity, press condition, and maintenance regime. Regular sharpening of cutting edges and prompt repair of wear extends tool life significantly.
