A project to extract valuable tungsten from a Cornish tin mine that closed more than 135 years ago has received a $9.25m (£7m) investment from the US government.
The funding, from the US Department of War, will bring “significantly accelerate” progress at Redmoor in South East Cornwall, the group behind the project said.
Widely viewed as Europe’s highest-grade, undeveloped tungsten resource – and one of the highest-grade tungsten projects globally – the mine is being regenerated by Cornwall Resources (CRL), a subsidiary of international mineral exploration firm Strategic Minerals.

The owner of a South West tungsten mine containing some of the world’s largest known deposits of the critical mineral has signed a supply agreement with a major US firm worth a possible £1.4bn.
Plymouth-based Tungsten West’s eight-year contract with Elmet Technologies, part of the US-based tungsten products and advanced materials Elmet Group, establishes a major UK-US tungsten supply relationship.
It also provides a “substantial long-term route” for the tungsten excavated at the firm’s Hemerdon mine in Plympton into US and UK tungsten processing and manufacturing supply chains.
In addition, the deal to supply 1,000 metric tonnes a year, positions Hemerdon as an increasingly important source of secure, Western-produced tungsten for defence, aerospace, advanced manufacturing and other strategic industries.
