Steel News – September 2026
The government has said it will work towards the public acquisition of Speciality Steel UK (SSUK), protecting more than 1,300 jobs across its sites.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the decision follows the conclusion that the government could not support a proposed sale to its preferred bidder, after detailed due diligence found the proposal could not provide the long-term stability, certainty and value for money that workers, communities and taxpayers deserve.
SSUK’s four sites, in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth and Wednesbury, have an established steelmaking history, including electric arc furnace technology, and have produced specialist steel for sectors including aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing, among products such as aircraft landing gear, helicopter rotors, missiles, munitions and artillery casings.
