Scientists at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have played a key role in a landmark hydrogen aviation trial with Rolls-Royce.  The partnership supported the successful test of a jet engine operating at full take-off power on 100% hydrogen fuel.

The test forms part of a wider Rolls-Royce hydrogen aviation programme aimed at exploring the feasibility of zero-carbon flight, and is being positioned as a significant step in the development of alternative propulsion technologies for the aerospace sector.

HSE’s specialist team at its Science and Research Centre in Buxton designed and delivered high-flow, high-pressure hydrogen control and monitoring infrastructure for the test rig, enabling safe delivery of fuel into the engine system under extreme operating conditions.

Commercial aircraft orders surged in April 2026, reaching their highest level for the month in a decade, according to the latest data from ADS.

The trade association for the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space industries data highlights that a total of 164 aircraft orders were placed during the month, almost eight times higher than April 2025. The sharp increase was driven in part by a resurgence in widebody demand, with 94 orders recorded, representing an 840% rise on the same month last year.
