Boeing faces a “serious challenge” and uncertain outlook as it seeks to restore confidence, its boss Dave Calhoun admitted, announcing the firm’s latest financial results on Wednesday.

Trust in the firm has been shaken since a panel of one of its 737 Max 9 jets broke off in mid-air.

Mr Calhoun said the company’s “full focus” was now on improving the quality of its planes.

In a staff letter, he said it was “not the time” to offer financial forecasts.  “We will simply focus on every next airplane,” he said.

The UK Government will back a new Tees Valley hydrogen refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with £7m and has also set aside £300,000 to support local colleges in offering hydrogen skills training.

The UK Government set out a vision for the Tees Valley to become the nation’s first hydrogen transport hub in 2020.  In a step towards delivery, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced the £7m funding package for fuel distributer Exolum on Tuesday (17 January).

This finance will be used to develop a publicly accessible refuelling station near Middlesborough which will provide green hydrogen, generated by running water through electrolyser systems powered with renewable electricity, to HGVs.

Econ Engineering’s fully electric-powered gritter has secured a landmark contract, with UK highways specialist Ringway signing up to take delivery of the E-QCB (Electric Quick-Change Body).

It is the first ever completely electric vehicle of its kind on the market.

Leyland Trucks is recruiting 28 new apprentices across the business.  The roles range from engineering and operations to project management and administration roles, and will include degree level apprenticeships.

The apprenticeships will be delivered in partnership with Preston College, Blackpool & The Fylde College, UCLan, Training 2000 or Runshaw College, and applicants will earn a wage, while they are supported in their learning at Leyland Trucks and at college.
