National Grid has set out plans to invest up to £35bn in infrastructure over a five-year period beginning April 2026, helping more renewables and energy storage come online.
The company is proposing investments of some £11bn to maintain and upgrade existing network infrastructure, including 3,500km of overhead lines. Innovative power control devices and dynamic power line ratings will be added to maximise the capacity of existing infrastructure.
Dark Green Group, an independent renewables developer, has announced plans to establish a fleet of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants in urban locations across the UK.
Over the next five years, the company plans to develop up to 12 AD plants on industrial sites, with the collective capacity to process 700,000 tonnes of organic waste annually and supply green gas to power 80,000 homes.
The proposed AD plants will convert food waste into green gas, offering an alternative to landfill and waste incineration. The UK Government recently tightened planning restrictions on waste incinerators, citing environmental concerns.
