British Standards Institution (BSI) has now published BS EN ISO 3611:2023 Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Dimensional measuring equipment — Design and metrological characteristics of micrometers for external measurements.

This sets out the most important design and metrological characteristics of micrometers for external measurement, whether they’re analogue, or digital with mechanical or electronic digital displays.

This is a corrected, improved and more user-friendly version of the standard that was last revised in 2010. Improvements to the 2023 standard include:

• greater clarity: we’ve stripped out the general design characteristics, which are already included in BS EN ISO 14978:2018
• greater precision: we’ve now included requirements for test methods
• greater efficiency: we’ve introduced a long-awaited table of default values for maximum permissible errors to streamline the process of periodic reverification.

A particularly important change is the introduction of default values for maximum permissible errors which simplifies the process of periodic reverification for users.
