New NPL Fellow – Gareth Hinds

NPL Fellowship is a recognition of individual merit awarded to scientists who are making very significant contributions to NPL’s scientific achievement and standing. It is a particular distinction that acknowledges and rewards significant scientific achievements and leadership.
Dr Gareth Hinds has been appointed NPL Fellow in Electrochemistry, in recognition of the significant contribution to scientific understanding and engineering impact of his cutting-edge research in corrosion, fuel cells, electrolysers and batteries, and his inspirational scientific leadership at NPL and in the international community.
Gareth is an outstanding multi-disciplined scientist who, since joining NPL in 2002, has undertaken world-leading research on corrosion and cracking issues in energy applications, catalyst degradation in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells and electrolysers, and thermal runaway in lithium ion batteries. His innovative scientific research is especially notable for its high level of industry engagement, with over 50 direct industry-funded projects and the widespread adoption by industry of his measurement techniques and recommendations to enhance current engineering practice and advance technological development. Gareth has established and continues to drive forward a brand new area of world-class science at NPL in electrochemical energy conversion and storage, which is a key strategic sector for the UK. He is Science Area Leader in Electrochemistry and plays an active role in strategy formulation, cross-divisional coordination and scientific leadership across the wider laboratory.
Gareth is the author of over 150 publications, including 65 peer-reviewed journal papers, 20 conference papers, 62 NPL technical reports and several trade journal articles. He sits on international standards committees IEC TC 105 (Fuel cell technologies), IEC TC 21 (Secondary cells and batteries) and ISO TC 67 (Materials, equipment and offshore structures for petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries). He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (FNACE), the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), the Institute of Corrosion (FICorr), and the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (FIMMM). He is currently serving as Vice President of the Institute of Corrosion and is Past Chair of its Corrosion Science Division. He is also a member of several NACE technical committees and sits on the Corrosion Committee of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the UK Corrosion Network. Gareth holds visiting academic positions at UCL, the University of Strathclyde and Harbin Institute of Technology, China.
