NPL have launched a new, free to access e-learning course: Introduction to Surface Topography Measurement

Estimated reading time 2 minutes

The course is aimed at anyone seeking an introduction to surface topography, from early-career individuals to experienced practitioners in related disciplines seeking to introduce surface topography measurement principles to their work. This course should also help learners to identify further learning or expert input for their needs.

This course:

  • Introduces the importance of surfaces for the evolved functions of natural organisms and in the performance of engineered components and products
  • Explains what a surface is, shows how it can be represented mathematically as a surface topography and demonstrates how surface topography is treated as distinct from the macroscale form and overall geometry of an object
  • Provides an overview of how and why we filter surface topography data
  • Introduces common instruments for the measurement of surface topography and explains how these instruments are specified and calibrated
  • Presents the standardisation framework for the metrology of surfaces

The length of this short course is 45 minutes. Find out more and sign up here: Introduction to Surface Topography Measurement – NPL Training.
