Storage capacity will have to increase sharply if hydrogen drives out gas as the main source of back up electricity generation, according to a new government-commissioned study.
The report, which was carried out by consultancy Baringa, is one of a series on electricity generation costs published this week by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
The study’s authors obtained estimates from companies involved in the development of salt caverns, which are reckoned to be the leading option for storing hydrogen, about how much will be required if the low carbon fuel’s share of the generation mix increases during periods when renewable power output will be low.
