Ofgem has confirmed major reforms to the UK’s electricity grid connection process, aimed at reducing delays for new energy projects.

Under the new rules, projects that are both ready to begin operations and align with national clean energy targets will be prioritised for grid connections. Ofgem states that the first of these projects could be connected and operational by 2026.

The reforms will clear out so-called ‘zombie’ projects—those that show little sign of progressing but are still holding places in the queue—making room for viable developments. The National Energy System Operator has already set out plans to charge the developers of ‘zombie projects’ for queue blocking.

Government will funnel £300m of funding to the development of domestic supply chains for offshore wind, reducing the nation’s reliance on imports and creating new manufacturing jobs.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband will present the plans in full at an international energy security summit jointly hosted by the UK Government and the International Energy Agency (IEA) this week.
