The Transport Secretary has directed HS2 to assess measures that could reduce complexity, cut costs, and accelerate delivery of the high-speed rail line.

The review forms part of a broader effort to reset the project after years of delays and rising expenditure.

HS2 was originally designed for speeds of 360 km/h, which would have made it the fastest conventional train in the world.
