The UN’s International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has approved a landmark deal to impose a carbon levy on global shipping emissions, setting binding targets for the sector to cut its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The agreement, reached today (11 April), includes a $100 charge for every tonne of carbon dioxide emitted above a newly established decarbonisation threshold.
Under the new framework, ships with a volume exceeding 5,000 gross tonnes must progressively reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity — measured as emissions per unit of fuel — by 30% by 2035 and 65% by 2040, compared to 2008 levels.
Vessels that fail to meet the stricter benchmark will face a $100-per-tonne fee, while those that fall short of a less demanding target could be charged up to $380 per tonne.
