Construction Industry News – Late January 2026

When the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) set up its Product Availability Group five year ago it was to keep tabs on shortages that were stymying construction activity and alert contractors of how much advance notice their suppliers required.

The Product Availability Group has since been renamed the Material Supply Chain Group as product availability has ceased to be an issue. Now it is customers that are in short supply.

The latest quarterly statement from the CLC Material Supply Chain Group this week is notable for its bleak assessment of market prospects without some rapid government intervention.

The group is co-chaired by the chief executives of the Builders Merchants Federation and Construction Products Association, John Newcomb and Peter Caplehorn, respectively, representing the full supply chain between them. Their latest report is a full-out cry for government support.
