The manufacture of a complete bike was the dream of Hope Technology’s founders Ian Weatherill and the late Simon Sharp. This dream is now reality with the launch of the Hope HB160 All Mountain/Trail style bike, with its full carbon fibre frame. In its development Hope Technology called on the vast expertise that exists within the UK to virtually rewrite the rules on bike production.
Hope Technology didn’t deliberately set out to create new standards, but its ethos of ‘no compromise’ resulted in a bike that uses very few current standards. “This may not be the best solution for compatibility, but when you make every part, as we do here in the UK at Hope Technology, it gives you the opportunity to manufacture a bike without compromise. With our expertise in component design and manufacture, we were able to design the entire project to create what we see as the perfect bike,” says Ian Weatherill.
In addition to drawing on the knowledge available for carbon fibre production, Hope Technology also maintained its ‘Made in Barnoldswick’ philosophy by producing all of the mould tools in-house, with support of tooling supplier WNT (UK). “Producing the mould tools was one of the easiest parts of the project, as we already have extensive machining capability and experience gained over 25 years manufacturing cycle components,” says Hope Technology’s Works and Production Manager, Lindley Pate. “We rely on our tooling partner WNT to ensure we are maximising machine performance, they played an important role in the development of machining strategies for these mould tools. The results were seen in the high standard of finish and fit, which is reflected in the final composite of the bike.”
While the technical support that Hope Technology received from WNT (UK)’s Technical Sales Engineer Nigel Walls and Applications Sales Engineer Billy Poore was invaluable on this mould tool project. Also, given the fast moving nature of the project and developments that were taking place, Hope Technology was also reliant on WNT’s next day guaranteed delivery of tools. Technical support and service that WNT provides to Hope Technology across its machining activities is not unusual, as customers, large and small can call on the expertise of WNT’s technical and applications sales engineers to assist with problem solving.
“WNT’s long-term relationship with Hope Technology is definitely a two-way street as while we continue to support their manufacturing activities with technical and logistical support, Hope in return is a partner of Team WNT Pro Cycling, our UCI Womens’ professional cycle team. Hope provides a range of components from hubs to wheels. This relationship is also extended further at our many customer events and the HB160 will make its WNT debut at our next customer mountain bike event,” Tony Pennington , UK & Ireland Managing Director.
