Defence giant Babcock International, which employs more than 10,400 people across 60-plus sites in the South West, hailed a “new era” for the sector today as it unveiled a double-digit leap in annual profits. Operating profit surged by more than 50% to £364m for the year to the end of March. The Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract worth over £114m to Scott Aerospace in Bristol to provide support for the Royal Navy’s submarine mechanical and secondary steam propulsion equipment.
The Submarine Mechanical and Secondary Steam Propulsion Equipment Support (SMASSES) contract covers the supply of spares and repairs across a range of components critical to the operation of the UK’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet.
