Fimark’s role
The MUON speakers retail at £180,000 a pair, and they are limited to an edition of 100 pairs. They are individually crafted, serialised and signed by Lovegrove himself. Fimark was approached by the British audio brand KEF to laser etch the signature, serial numbers and other key, functional information onto the back of these state-of-the-art speakers.
The Challenge
These 2-meter-high speakers are fabricated from super-formed aluminium to create a shape devoid of sharp edges and are extremely stiff. The shape of the speaker is perfect for its purpose, but its compound curves, large size and mirrored polished surface make it very difficult to laser etch. Fortunately, Fimark houses a laser system large enough to accommodate objects as big as the MUON. By using the correct lens, laser parameters and optics, Fimark is able to achieve the field of focus large enough to accommodate the curvature of the surface.
