Test drilling in a Cornish tin mine closed since 1878 is to start within weeks, with the chairman of the business that owns its mineral rights saying the timing could not be better.

Tamar Minerals, an exploration company primarily focused on tin and copper deposits in the South West of England, has engaged a specialist firm to drill down 1,900m at Great Wheal Vor, a group of 26 former tin and copper mines near Helston.

The area was one of Cornwall’s premier tin producers in the 19th century, but mining ceased 148 years ago due to a dispute over mineral rights.

Tamar, which has ambitions to harness the South West’s historic copper and tin belt, now has the rights to the area containing the main tin vein.
