Anglesey in North Wales will host the first small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) project in the UK, creating 3,000 jobs and potentially billions in investment over the next 10 years.
The reactors are to be designed by Rolls-Royce SMR, subject to final contract, and built by publicly owned energy company Great British Energy’s Nuclear arm.
The £2.5bn investment in the North Wales site, confirmed today by the UK Government, is expected to deliver power to around three million homes as well as NHS sites.
Ministers have talked up the benefits in terms of reduced reliance on fossil fuel imports, national security and further British innovation.
While preliminary works have been going on in Suffolk for the new £38bn nuclear power station at Sizewell, reaching financial close sees funding for the project now beginning to flow. Completion is expected in 2035-36.
Following the conclusion of the equity raise and Sizewell C’s final investment decision from government in July 2025, the company has confirmed the £5bn of debt raised through an export credit facility from BpifranceAE (France’s state investment bank) as well as a £500m working capital facility, both sitting alongside a loan from the UK’s National Wealth Fund.
Thirteen banks have supported the £5bn debt raise and a subset of these are providing the working capital facility.
