A consortium led by contractor Kier Group has been appointed as development partner for the redevelopment of the former West Burton Power Station site, where the UK plans to build its first prototype fusion energy plant.
The government confirmed the appointment of the ILIOS consortium alongside the launch of a new national fusion strategy designed to accelerate the commercial development of the technology.
ILIOS is led by Kier and nuclear engineering specialist Nuvia, with partners, AECOM, Turner & Townsend and architects AL_A Architects.
The consortium will deliver the early-stage redevelopment of the Nottinghamshire site, which closed as a coal-fired power station in 2023 after 57 years of generation. The project is part of the government’s STEP programme, which aims to develop the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant, with operations targeted in the 2040s. Sourced from TheBusinessDesk
