Power generation from fossil fuels in the UK has fallen to levels last seen in the 1950s, and demand for gas has dropped to its lowest level in more than 30 years.
The latest edition of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) quarterly Energy Trends, which covers the final three months of 2024, also shows that renewables accounted for more than half of total generation across a whole year for the first time. According to the statistics, generation from fossil fuels fell 16% in 2024 to 89.7 TWh, reaching levels last seen in the 1950s.
