Trade unions have presented British Steel with a plan to keep two blast furnaces open in Scunthorpe and save thousands of jobs.

Unions GMB, Community and Unite met with bosses from British Steel owner Jingye this week and submitted their plan to maintain a two blast furnace operation throughout the transition to low carbon steelmaking.

Heathrow Airport has confirmed that it intends to submit plans for a third runway to the government this summer and will favour the use of British-made steel.

At an event at British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant today, Heathrow Airport chief executive Thomas Woldbye confirmed that the airport is developing its long-standing plans for a third runway.

The announcement comes two weeks after chancellor of the exchequer Rachel Reeves said she supported the idea of a third runway at Heathrow.
