UK Steel has welcomed the government’s final decision on steel import quotas, describing the package as a step forward in protecting the UK’s steel industry from the impacts of global overcapacity and unfairly traded imports.

UK Steel has given its support to the overall framework and welcomes the government’s willingness to engage closely with industry throughout the process. Ministers and their officials at the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) undertook extensive discussions with UK Steel, steel producers, and downstream manufacturers, and their hard work and diligence are to be commended.

Jason Galley, director and chief executive of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA), welcomed the decision, saying the revised tariff-free quotas strike a better balance between supporting UK steelmaking and ensuring manufacturers can access the steel they need. “It’s essential that MPMA members can continue to access the steel they need to deliver for their customers,” he said, adding that the move would help protect jobs and maintain competitiveness across the supply chain.

West Midlands manufacturers could still face rising costs, supply shortages and potential job losses despite government adjustments to new steel safeguarding quotas coming into force this week, industry leaders have warned.

The Confederation of British Metalforming (CBM), which represents more than 75,000 employees across 200 companies in sectors including automotive, construction, defence and energy, said the revised measures still do not go far enough to protect downstream manufacturers.

While ministers have increased some quota allowances following industry pressure, the CBM said the changes amount to “a stay of execution” for firms reliant on specialist steel grades not currently produced in sufficient quantities in the UK.
