SGS Launches New Series 43 Non-Ferrous Roughing Tool

SGS Tool Company, a leader in round solid carbide cutting tool technology, has added a new series of Roughing End Mills to its S-Carb product line in support of the company’s on-going Series 43commitment to provide high performance cutting solutions. The new Series 43 Chip Breaker delivers load reduction and offers superior chip management during aggressive aluminium and non-ferrous machining.

The new tool range features a number of enhancements such as an engineered flute design with a flute shape that facilitates the rapid movement of the large volume of chips created during aggressive machining. While symmetrical end gashing provides superior balance in a high speed environment, improving surface finishes when compared to traditional 3-flute designs and offering unsurpassed plunging capabilities.

Specialised chip breaker geometry disrupts the chip flow along the cutting edge resulting in smaller and more controlled chips. This prevents built-up edge and reduces power consumption, while also avoiding the tendency for stringy swarf to form a ‘nest’ around the tool.

Managing Director, Alan Pearce, says: “Most aluminium aerospace components require 80 per cent, or more, of the original raw material to be removed. So, the roughing process has a significant impact on the overall cycle time, and therefore efficiency, achieved. The new Series 43 has been designed to minimise the roughing time required, with features that are specifically targeted to this goal. We know that machined aluminium occupies 10 times the volume of the original raw material, so evacuation of the chips via the engineered flutes and the management of the length of the chips with the breaker geometry are crucial.”

The new roughing tools are ideal for heavy material removal applications where cycle time reductions are critical. The S-Carb Series 43 is available in imperial and metric diameters, standard lengths in both an uncoated and an optional coated version.
