The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s National Metrology Institute, and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate metrology standards, science and technology available.

NPL’s world-class capabilities provide support to industry to meet demanding manufacturing requirements and to help instil best practices in measurement processes.

Our measurement and inspection services are built on over 100 years of leadership in accuracy, innovation and scientific research. Experienced scientists, engineers and project managers draw upon a unique combination of industry know-how and world-leading scientific discovery to deliver real-world business solutions, help companies innovate and secure competitive advantage.

NPL’s inspection and calibration services are ISO 17025 (UKAS) accredited. Services include accurate measurement of complex parts, gauges, assemblies and freeform surfaces; independent instrument and inspection process evaluations: and verification of measurement instruments. We also have capability in design and calibration of bespoke reference and check standards. Our CMM, non-contact scanning and first principles measurement and CMM programming and programme validation services are designed to support and enhance in-house inspection processes

NPL is working with precision engineering companies throughout the Aerospace, Civil Nuclear, Automotive and Medical Devices Sectors to identify and implement manufacturing and inspection process improvements based on measurement best practice.  The need to maintain competitiveness in these areas is being driven by the introduction of new industry quality standards and NPL is ideally placed to advise on the best ways of meeting these challenges.

NPL’s Training Framework encourages learners to make a difference in their workplaces, giving them the opportunity to generate a return on investment for their employer whilst simultaneously improving corporate measurement capability. The courses focus on developing an understanding of the basic principles of measurement; instilling a questioning culture and the identification of false impressions of accuracy and consistency that automation gives. This results in saving time and money for companies through more effective decision-making.
