From A to Z and everything in between! Physical Digital’s Review of the Year 2015

From Immingham (UK) to Invercargill (New Zealand), North Dakota (US) to Northampton (UK), Scotland to Slovakia, Physical Digital’s engineers have travelled the world this year bringing the fully-mobile, high-accuracy GOM ATOS and Tritop non-contact scanning systems to the aid of many engineering and design projects.

3D Scanning A to Z

This year we have scanned a whole range of items from small components of mere millimetres to the impressive 20 metre hull of an ocean-going yacht. Our clients represent a wide variety of industry sectors include marine, motorsport, aeronautical engineering, education, automotive, oil and gas, architecture and power generation.

From: Angelic Bulldog, the UK’s motorcycle land speed record attempt – we scanned the engine and chassis of the vehicle in order for the design team to make modifications for the rider. Watch the video here: Angelic Bulldog

To: Zethrin – we continued our involvement with the enthusiast, James Andrews, who is building an historic car inspired by the Squires and Zethrin Car Companies of the 1930s.

Automated Measurement facility opens

And that’s not all! Our most exciting project of the year has been the installation of an automated measurement cell in a dedicated site in the West Midlands. The GOM ScanBox 5120 offers clients the opportunity to gain world-class metrology supported by our highly-trained and accredited engineers. It is the first and only independent robotised service of its kind in the UK – making quality assurance for large batches of components much quicker and speeding up time to market for product design.

Miles and Miles

The Applications Engineers have clocked up the air, sea and land miles in the pursuit of excellence for our clients worldwide. From the Isle of Wight to South Island, New Zealand, a conservative estimate suggests that the team have easily travelled over 100,000 miles in 2015.

Our stay-at-home design engineers have been no less busy beavering away on reverse engineering and improving our clients’ designs for a whole range of engineering projects…many of which we aren’t able to talk about. Using Siemens NX and Geomagic Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, Our dedicated CAD engineers have expert knowledge in product development, mechanical design and analysis and we offer full reverse engineering capabilities in freeform, geometric and hybrid CAD.

Business Recognition

2015 also marked a new stage for recognition of the company’s achievements. Ten years after Tim Rapley founded Physical Digital, he was on stage collecting the FSB Business Innovation Award 2015 for the company held at Mercedes-Benz World Brooklands. In fact, we have been shortlisted in two other Business Awards this year, both locally – in the Toast of Surrey Awards and countrywide – in the British Engineering Excellence Awards.
