Analysis commissioned by UK Steel shows that in the last five years less than 2% of steel used in UK wind farms was fabricated in the UK, and almost none using UK made steel. Despite having the capacity to produce over half of the steel needed for offshore wind, the UK remains overwhelmingly reliant on foreign steel to achieve net zero for energy generation in the UK.
Research shows the British steel sector can already supply up to 13 million of the 25 million tonnes of steel needed for offshore wind over 25 years and with the right investment, this could soar to meet almost all of our future steel requirements for offshore wind expansion. https://www.uksteel.org/steel-news-2025/mutual-benefit-steel-investment-could-secure-british-made-steel-for-offshore-wind-boom-and-shore-up-national-security
GB Railfreight (GBRf), one of the UK’s leading transporters of goods for businesses and consumers, has started a new service for Tata Steel UK, moving imported steel slab from the Port of Bristol at Portbury to the giant steelworks at Port Talbot.
GBRf will be running this service until the end of 2027 when Tata Steel’s new three million tonne-per-year Electric Arc Furnace is due to be commissioned.
The first Tata Steel train left Portbury on 3 March.
