Introducing successful innovation – Physical Digital’s ScanBox
The Business Innovation Award celebrates the creativity and innovative thinking of Physical Digital Limited and recognises how technology plays a crucial part in developing the business. In order to win, we were required to demonstrate a particular example of a successful change implemented in the past two years. For Physical Digital, that innovation was the ScanBox service facility we introduced in 2015 – the UK’s first and only independent GOM high-resolution automated 3D non-contact scanning service facility.
Tim Rapley, Physical Digital’s MD, expressed his delight at the public recognition of all that is good about his company: “It’s an honour to have won the Business Innovation Award, which celebrates the continuous improvement and innovation we undertake within the company. We aim to provide our clients the best service possible and we constantly evolve and develop our technology, staff and facilities.”
UK’s first and only independent high-resolution automated non-contact 3D scanning service
The judges noted in particular the exceptional level of innovation shown in autumn 2015 when we introduced the UK’s first and only high-resolution independent automated measurement service facility. This new robot cell, the ScanBox, offers companies large and small the competitive edge in fast, high-volume non-contact 3D scanning and inspection. The contract service offered by the ScanBox has the power to transform British manufacturing by allowing companies to use world-class metrology without the need for costly capital expenditure. The ScanBox service facility is the company’s most recent example of innovative and bold use of technology and new thinking.

Introducing the Gala Dinner, Antonio Falco, the Regional Chairman of FSB Surrey and West Sussex, congratulated all the finalists, saying: “We had many more entries than last year and the judging was tough! These prestigious business awards give us all the opportunity to show what Surrey has to offer and the great business that are based here.”
Highly trained and accredited team
Receiving the Business Innovation Award from the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Jan Fuller, Tim Rapley recognised the efforts of all his staff: “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the whole company. The team works incredibly hard for the benefit of all our clients across many high-value sectors and I’d like to thank them publicly for all their dedication and effort. To receive this award is a fantastic honour for our small business, recognising our position at the forefront of UK metrology.”
Benjamin Singer, Senior Applications Engineer, part of Physical Digital’s highly-trained team
Tim is rightly proud of his highly-trained team, which is the company’s secret weapon separating the award-winning firm from the rest of its competition. All staff undergo rigorous in-house and external training on the high-specification GOM systems used by the company and then take national qualifications in Metrology offered and accredited by the National Physical Laboratory, the UK’s national Measurement Institute. One senior engineer is currently completing his Metrology foundation degree – the only degree offered in this subject in the world – at Coventry University. Quality and innovation are key in developing the business for Tim and his team – and it seems that the FSB judges agree!
