What are Jigs and Fixtures?

Jigs and fixtures are both production tooling used to achieve interchangeable, accurately made parts, but they perform different roles:

  • A jig guides and supports the cutting tool, controlling its position relative to the workpiece. Drill jigs are the most common example.
  • A fixture holds and locates the workpiece securely while it is machined, welded, assembled, or inspected, but does not guide the tool.

By locating parts consistently and removing reliance on manual setting, jigs and fixtures vastly reduce human error, allow components to be produced quickly to tight tolerances, and cut production costs. GTMA members supply:

  • Custom machining fixtures and modular workholding systems
  • Hydraulic clamping – swing clamps, block cylinders, and work supports
  • Welding and assembly fixtures
  • Inspection and metrology fixtures for CMM and gauging applications
  • Drill jigs, standard components, and jig bushes

Applications of Jigs and Fixtures

Fixtures are essential wherever repeatability matters. The automotive sector is a major user, with body-in-white welding fixtures, machining fixtures, and assembly jigs used throughout vehicle production. Jigs and fixtures also support aerospace assembly, press tool setting and tryout, medical device manufacture, and high-mix subcontract machining where fast, accurate changeovers protect margin.

Benefits of Well-Designed Jigs and Fixtures

  • Consistent part location, reducing scrap and rework
  • Faster cycle times and reduced setting time between batches
  • Interchangeable parts without skilled manual marking out
  • Improved operator safety through secure clamping
  • Lower unit costs across production volumes

GTMA is the Gauge and Tool Makers Association – a UK trade association connecting engineering buyers with accredited jig and fixture manufacturers and workholding specialists across the supply chain.

Jigs & Fixtures FAQs

A jig guides the cutting tool and often moves with the work, while a fixture holds the workpiece rigidly in a fixed position and does not guide the tool. In practice, many production tools combine both functions, locating the part and controlling the tool path in one device.

Most production jigs and fixtures are made from mild or tool steel for durability, with hardened bushes and wear plates at contact points. Aluminium is used where weight matters, and modular fixture systems use standardised steel components that can be reconfigured between jobs.

They guarantee that every part is located and processed identically, which is the foundation of interchangeable manufacture. This reduces human error, speeds up production, improves safety, and allows less experienced operators to produce accurate work consistently.

Yes. GTMA fixture manufacturers regularly design workholding around existing component drawings or CAD models, and can reverse engineer legacy parts where drawings no longer exist. Early collaboration between fixture designer and production engineer delivers the best results.
