Mould tools are used throughout a number of industries to help shape plastics. They are usually made of pre-hardened steel, hardened steel or aluminium. Two sides of metal come together perfectly and, inside, is a moulded space. Plastic is injected into this space and the two sides of metal and firmly shut. Once the plastic has cooled, the two pieces of metal are prised apart and the moulded product will be released.
It is generally believed that steel mould tools are the best if you need countless complex mouldings and have a strong budget. If you require 100 to 500,000 simple to complex mouldings quickly and also have a limited budget alloy mould tools are most suitable. You can also have mould tools comprised of both materials.
Delivery time on mould tools can be anything from a few weeks to several months depending on the size and complexity. Mould tools are highly engineering and precision pieces of equipment that take a lot of expert hours to produce. Furthermore, due to CAM and CAD, mould tooling costs have reduced over the years.
