How to Choose a UK Precision Machining Company?
Before commissioning a supplier, check the following against your specification:
- Accreditation – ISO 9001 is standard across GTMA members. Aerospace and defence work typically requires AS9100, and specialist processes such as heat treatment, coating, and non-destructive testing often call for NADCAP certification
- Process match – not every precision machining company covers every process. Jig grinding, deep-hole boring, optical profile grinding, and flat lapping are specialist capabilities, not universal ones. Confirm the supplier handles your specific operation before enquiring
- Inspection and traceability – for regulated sectors, confirm the supplier issues certified inspection reports and can trace material back to source. Ask whether metrology is carried out in house or subcontracted
- Batch size – some members specialise in one-off prototypes and short runs, others in production volume. Ask directly rather than inferring from the profile
- Location – for lower-value or time-sensitive components, a nearer supplier reduces freight cost and turnaround. Use the county filter below
For the technical distinction between precision machining and CNC precision machining, and achievable tolerance figures by process, see our CNC Precision Machining page.
Applications of Precision Machining Services
Subcontract precision machining supports the most demanding UK industries. The oil and gas sector relies on precision-machined valve components, downhole tooling, and sealing surfaces that must perform reliably under extreme pressure and temperature. Medical device manufacturing and scientific instrumentation require certified traceability and verification through in-house or subcontract metrology. Marine work draws on the same corrosion-resistant materials and inspection discipline. Toolmaking relies on the specialist finishing processes, lapping, honing, and optical profile grinding, that this directory’s members provide.
For aerospace, defence, automotive and motorsport sourcing, see the CNC Precision Machining directory.
Benefits of Working with UK Precision Machining Companies
- Every listed company is a GTMA member with verifiable accreditation, not an unvetted directory entry
- Direct contact with the supplier, with no intermediary or lead-selling layer
- Filter by county to find UK capacity near your site
- Profiles cover process capability and accreditation, so you can shortlist before making contact
- Direct engineer-to-engineer communication rather than routing through a sales gateway
GTMA is the Gauge and Tool Makers Association – a UK trade association connecting engineering buyers with accredited precision machining companies and precision engineering specialists across the supply chain.
Precision Machining FAQs
A precision machining company removes material from a workpiece using processes such as turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and EDM to produce components to very tight tolerances. Most operate as subcontract suppliers, machining parts to customer drawings or CAD models with certified inspection.
Standard CNC machining typically holds tolerances of ±0.01mm to ±0.05mm. Precision processes such as grinding, lapping, and jig grinding can achieve tolerances measured in microns, with surface finishes to match. The achievable tolerance depends on the material, geometry, and process combination.
Precision machining describes the outcome: achieving very tight tolerances and high accuracy. CNC machining describes the method: computer numerical control of machine tools. Most precision machining today is performed on CNC machines, but manual processes such as lapping and hand finishing still play a role in the tightest-tolerance work.
Aerospace, oil and gas, medical devices, motorsport, defence, scientific instrumentation, and toolmaking all depend on precision machined components. Any application where parts must fit, seal, or perform reliably under load requires precision machining.
GTMA’s supplier directory lists accredited UK precision machining and precision engineering companies with profiles covering processes, capacity, and accreditations. Browse the members above and contact them directly with your drawings or requirements.
